Spoony Stories - meet Emily! 👋

Welcome to Spoony Stories ❤️🥄 Sharing stories is a powerful reminder that we're not alone. Each week, we share stories from our vibrant community to hear all about their experiences being neurodivergent, chronically ill and disabled, and to get to know some of the voices that make our Spoony community so wonderful.

This week, we chat with Emily from the United Kingdom! Thanks for sharing your story! ❤️

Are you neurodivergent, chronically ill, and/or disabled?

Chronically ill.

What health conditions do you have?

Fibromyalgia, Endometriosis, Adenomyosis, IBS, Tachycardia, migraines.

I suspect that I might be neurodivergent too.

How do you explain your health conditions to other people?

I really struggle with this. It's like waking up the day after a brutal full body workout while being forced to carry a weighted blanket everywhere you go. You have never-ending headaches, sensitivity to light, and random stabbing pain in your lower stomach. But no one else can see it

What impact do your health conditions have on your daily life?

It makes every day unpredictable. There is no way I can work a "normal" job anymore, believe me I've tried. It means having to constantly adapt to have some form of normality. I've learned to focus on the "cans" and smaller things in life.

What barriers have you experienced in making friends and connecting with people?

Some days, I don't have the energy to connect with people in the way I'd like to. I struggle to leave the house and go out, due to the pain and fatigue. So online connections work best for me.

What's been your experience on Spoony so far?

Spoony has opened up a world where you're already operating on some understanding of each other and seeing similar experiences is comforting. It takes some of the pressure off having to explain my health and the impact it has to able bodied folx.

Each week, we share stories from the incredible Spoony community in our newsletter, podcast, and on social media. Share your story with us.
